Catholic Misconceptions

Is Catholicism Really Centered on Jesus?

Yes. Jesus Christ is the center of Catholic faith. The Church’s teaching, worship, sacraments, and devotions are meant to bring us into deeper communion with Him.

The Catechism places the Person of Jesus at the heart of teaching the faith. Its purpose is to help people know Him and, through Him, share in the life of the Trinity.

Explore Catechism §§425–427.

Why can that be difficult to see?

Catholic life has many visible elements: churches, statues, saints, rosaries, vestments, feast days, and particular prayers.

Without understanding how these belong together, someone can reasonably wonder where Jesus fits.

Understanding their purpose helps reveal the connections.

Everything depends on Christ

Paul describes Christ as the head of the Church and the One through whom God reconciles all things to Himself.

Jesus also describes our dependence on Him through the image of the vine and branches. Our life and fruitfulness come through remaining in Him.

He is the source of the life the Church receives and shares.

Read Colossians 1:15–20 and John 15:1–5.

How do the different parts point toward Him?

The Eucharist: Catholics believe we receive Christ Himself—His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Explore Catechism §1374.

Confession: Christ’s forgiveness reaches us through the ministry He entrusted to His Church.

Explore Catechism §§1441–1442.

Mary: Her place in the faith depends entirely on her Son. Her example and intercession help draw us toward Him.

Explore Catechism §§970–971.

The saints: Their holiness comes from God’s grace. Their lives show responses to Christ’s call, and their prayers serve His saving work.

Learning to see the connections

This has been an important part of my own walk.

As my conviction about the Eucharist and the sacraments grew, I became more willing to explore teachings I had understood less fully. I began seeing how they fit together and point toward Christ.

I also had to recognize that I could practice parts of my faith outwardly while giving Him little of my heart. Understanding the purpose of those practices has helped me enter into them more fully.

What I want to share is how discovering the richness of my Catholic faith has helped me move from knowing OF Jesus toward truly KNOWING Him.
